The movie is a story of a long and unending feud between Mirza (Amitabh Bachchan) the husband of Fatima Mahal’s (a Haveli) owner and their obstinate tenant Baakey Ratogi (Ayushmann Khurrana).

This is not the list of players. There are others too in this quagmire dominated by struggles of personal and vested interest.

Gulabo Sitabo Movie Review

The story revolves around this 100-year-old mansion named Fatima Mahal situated in Lucknow. The state of this mansion is in ruins and is shambles at best. It is cohabited by multiple families who pay a paltry rent ranging from thirty to seventy rupees.

But here is one kernel in the mango pulp, Baankey –he has no interest in paying rent, nor is he vacating the house. His only excuse is that he is in abject poverty. Mirza has heard one thing most from this self-proclaimed poor “Main Ghareeb Hoon” and this makes him burn with anger.

This 78-year-old Mirza is a prank-pulling and bad-mouthed old man. His only dream is to become the legal owner of this the Haveli he lives in. it is the dearest and only mentionable asset, if he ever gets the rights, he can have.

In order to achieve his goal, he comes up with cunning plots once in a while. Yet far, he has remained unsuccessful despite countless attempts. When he sees, all his cunning schemes come to dogs, he has a new plan.

He breaks the brick wall of the common toilet in a desperate attempt to make the stubborn Baankey leave. Then he rushes to the police station to settle the complicating dispute.

Now here comes the role of an officer from the Archaeological Survey of India for Lucknow area. This is Mr. Gyanesh Mishra played by Vijay Raaz. This crafty and power abusive officer has another plan.

He believes this mansion has the potential to become a national heritage property and attempts to convince Baankey about this plan and how it can benefit the tenants.

Mirza has seen the world, and deceiving him requires skills and plots beyond what they are equipped with currently. He counters the scheme with Christopher Clark (Brijendra Kala), his secret weapon in this battle for the house.

Mr. Clark allegedly speaks English, but only at home. He claims to have a catalog that is specifically about resolving property disputes.

The mansion has become the most sought after property in the town. With everyone here with a personal axe to grind, it has become an issue of immense complexity.

The movie in the satire genre is a social commentary on the psyche of humans. It tells us what happens when the greed takes a front seat in the events and affairs that require collaboration and working together.

The movie is a combo of a story that is funny, witty, intelligent, and engaging with the characters with undulating habits that are dark and funny at the same time.

On the one hand, Mirza is propelled by greed and he has no scruples about it. In fact, he is known for his stringiness across Lucknow. While, Baankey, a poor, young boy bogged down by the responsibilities of the family yet resolute enough to fend off the attacks by unscrupulous Mirza.

Another odd thing about the story is the pair of Mirza and Fatima Begum played by Farrukh Jaffar. A difference of 15 odd years in age, their personal life is another weird tale to reckon with.

The movie gets moderate to good figures on multiple scales. One major negative highlight is the story build-up takes a lot more time than is appropriate for a movie of the type. You might feel it is dragging you some extra miles, before giving you some surprising twists.

Another aspect is that, had the odd couple of Fatima and Mirza been given some more footage time, it would have made the movie even better.

It revolves around one of the base human character, greed. Portrayed by two strong quarrelsome figures in the movie. It tells us that having desires in a limit is acceptable, but when it surpasses a certain perimeter, you might lose what you already have.

This is not a type of movie that Bollywood is normally identified with. That is pitted love and action stories. It will take you on a whole different course that is dotted by wit, humor skillfully portrayed by the actors giving justice to a story it is.

If you want a witty break from the usual drama types, this is the one you must spare time for.
